Friday Seven

So I had a very helpful talks with people, and I know where I want to take my project.

My idea know is that I want to create a map, pointing out the landmarks I'm exploring (street corners, parks, school yards, housing projects) and have a walking tour someone could follow. Sean and I talked about having performances be a part of it, having a couple of singers perform songs in accordance to the person of interest in each place. I really like the idea of a map, it's something I can definitely do no matter what. I really would still love to have a visual representation at each place as well, and my idea would be to have a 'record' on the ground, similar to the hollywood stars, at each landmark. On these records, there would be information and images to inform the viewer on the place's importance.

The point I want to make is that all of these Motown performers were and are Detroiters. They grew up here, and sang here. I hope that this tour will put people in this context, and not to wish for better times, but to appreciate the place as an event. I think the singers I would have on the tour will really help with this. I have access to singers, being in an a cappella group...

Meanwhile, I found this image of the Supremes walking outside of the Brewster-Douglass projects. I thought this photo was really interesting:

As far as my December review, I want to have the map made up, with points plotted on it, a solid proposal and possibly a performance. Basically, a sample of what this tour would be like.

WHAT NEXT

getting a map of Detroit and plotting out points

Setting up interview questions for Martha Reeves and the directors of the Detroit Historical Society.

  1. Michelle,

Sounds like you had some breakthroughs this week. Awesome! Have you been out to these street corners you are interested in engaging to take photos and get a feel for the area as it is now?

This idea of using a map could be really interesting depending on how interactive it becomes. It makes me think of children's toys where you lift a flap or press a button on the page and a song starts playing.

In thinking about having singers along this tour, you may consider engaging the communities who live on these blocks. There may be local church choirs who would like to participate which could generate more excitement for the neighborhoods you are addressing. Who would these tours be targeting? Are you thinking of this tour in terms of an event/performance, or something that can continue when you are not present?
