I had a great meeting with Nick Tobier about my project, and he suggested that I include interesting places to go in the city on the tour itself. This got me thinking that the tour could be an experience of a less explored Detroit through the history and places of Motown. Places like Peaches & Greens which is a great little grocery store near Northern High, or Bert's Warehouse Theater in Eastern Market.
Simply sticking with the nostalgia of what was doesn't satisfy me, but by integrating the great places that are, the tour will motivate people to explore places outside of the downtown bubble, and do what I wanted this tour to do: invigorate people in the city.
The map/brochure I'll be making will outline every place on the tour and also give recommendations for other places as well. That way, if someone wanted to return, they'll have that map to show them and remind them where to find, say, that great record store they saw on the tour.
And as far as my presentation goes, I'll be going to Detroit this weekend to photograph and explore the areas further to get some ideas on where to go and highlight.
I'm very excited about this new direction!
